Intra-articular Injections

Intra-articular joint injections are commonly used in the treatment of joint disease, especially arthritis, to reduce pain and inflammation, and to restore mobility. Cortisteroid injections are usually the first line of injection therapy. Many patients report months of relief. These injections can be repeated at the discretion of your physician. Most intra-articular knee injections are given in the office whereas hip injections are usually scheduled and performed by a physiatrist or radiologist using x-ray guidance in an outpatient facility.

Hyaluronic acid injections are another type of injection therapy. These "rooster shots" or "jelly shots" are meant to reduce pain by enhancing the lubrication and shock absorption of the synovial fluid (joint fluid) in the knee. These injections are given in a series of three to five injections spaced about a week apart. Some patients report immediate relief whereas others only realize benefit after the last injection. It is possible to experience relief up to twelve months with this therapy. The series can be repeated.

Please talk with your physician and his/her staff about your options.
